If you are tired of endless hair fall and hard to get rid off pesky dandruff, don’t lost hope. I’m glad you’ve chosen to read about how this homemade herbal hair oil can help you.
I have had beautiful lush hair all my life, if I may say so myself. Genes, I guess. My dad, his sister and my grand mom have had lush thick and long hair. Clearly it ran in our genes. Until mid last year. Out of the blue, I started to have a really bad case of hair fall for which I knew no reason why.
Post pregnancy hair fall around the fifth month is terrible. Every mother experiences it. But, this was worse than that. My hair were falling out in clumps. Everywhere in the house, I was leaving hair trails. I had to be extra careful while cooking. Washing and combing my hair became almost nightmarish.
That is when it dawned on me how much I had taken my good hair for granted. Began to realize the importance of something that I had completely neglected after being a busy mom of two active kids. A good hair care regimen!
I couldn’t remember the last time I actually showered some much deserved TLC to my hair that I used to, so religiously during my college days. Then and there I decided it was time for some change and due diligence. After taking care of vitamin deficiencies and ruling out hormonal issues, I wanted to make a DIY Herbal Hair oil at home with the goodness of easily available ingredients that nourish the hair.
If you can relate to my story, I’ve got you covered. Please do make sure to rule out any underlying medical conditions if any.
Quite often we underestimate the power of home remedies and are ready to pay for expensive hair care solutions by overlooking what can be easily achieved at home.
In South India, it is common knowledge that Curry leaves and Coconut oil are great for hair health. Coconut oil nourishes and revitalizes dry and damaged hair and also has a cooling effect. And also are Mehendi / Henna and Methi / Fenugreek seeds known to be excellent hair and scalp conditioners respectively. Amla / Nellikayi (Indian Gooseberry) is considered a Tridoshic food in Ayurveda, meaning it balances all the three doshas Vatha, Pittha and Kapha. Brahmi is a growth promoter with regenerative qualities other than being a great memory booster. Hibiscus strengthens the hair follicles. Sesame seeds are rich with essential fatty acids, stimulates hair growth and removes toxins. Agase / Agasthya leaves (Agathi) with white flowers have a calming effect for stress / anxiety control. Ridge Gourd helps to enrich the hair roots and restore the pigment / prevent premature greying.
Sesame oil can also be used in place of Coconut Oil.
This Homemade Herbal Oil incorporates the goodness of all the above said medicinal ingredients. Apart from being great for you, making it at home will also give you a huge sense of satisfaction that you have taken a positive step in the right direction.
Hair is an indicator of overall health. So do look into other factors such as consuming wholesome food, drinking plenty of water, exercising till you sweat, avoiding processed foods, stress and anxiety control in the form of Yoga, addressing hormonal changes if any and not succumbing to crash diets. The first casualty of crash diets which nobody tells you, is Hair.
There is no magic cure for hair loss. You have to apply this oil regularly, persistently over at least a 3 month period.
Other things you can do to help your body:
- Massage the warm herbal hair oil with your finger tips over your scalp for better blood circulation
- Drink wheat grass juice first thing in the morning for toxin removal
- Fenugreek seeds or menthya soaked in water, ground to a paste and applied on hair as a pack to have dandruff free lush hair
- Apply Henna hair pack to condition the hair, add color and keep it soft. Almost all women are well versed with soaking henna powder in an iron vessel, leaving it overnight and applying as a hair pack
Hope this Herbal Hair oil becomes a vital part of your care routine as much it is of ours.

How long did I let the oil sit?
A: 24 hours over night you can let it sit longer if you need to. You can also heat the mixture to speed up infusion. I prefer to soak at room temp to not remove any beneficial properties from the oils
How often can herbs be reused?
A: I reuse my herbs roughly 3 times before starting from scratch
These oils are expensive, how can I create this on a budget?
A: Use one carrier oil and one essential oil of choice. I can suggest castor and peppermint or rosemary, but I cannot confirm the same results as this is the mixture I am personally using. I have invested in oils for DIY mixtures for over 3 years so it’s okay not to make this right away. Good things take time
How did I learn about these herbs?
A: There was an Ayurvedic shop by my old house on the east coast. I inquired with the doctor there about hair growth and added the herbs to a lot of my DIYs since then. This is currently my favorite mixture
Is the mixture grainy from powder?
A: No this mixture is smooth because I’m using a strainer made for juicing. On a budget you can use cheese cloth, a stocking, or nut milk strainer bag used to make homemade almond milks etc
This is a lot of time and money?!
A: Everyone wants the results, but in reality only a small percent will put the work in. I make time and create budgets for my goals. Even in college broke as a joke I still had a hair budget set aside over time. It’s possible! It just has to be a priority
